The Nigerian federal government and Lagos State have agreed to work together on a new flood defence plan, according to The Guardian Nigeria News. The joint strategy will focus on fixing drainage failures and addressing risks linked to climate change.
The announcement follows a series of meetings between state and federal officials, with the latest details reported on Saturday, 8 August 2026. The Nation Newspaper also reported that the federal government has begun an assessment of flood risks in Lagos as part of the new push.
The collaboration is not limited to drainage repairs. According to TVC News, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Minister of Water Resources have deepened their cooperation on climate resilience. In a separate report, Peoples Gazette Nigeria said the federal government is considering integrating hydropower into flood control projects, suggesting the plan could serve dual purposes of energy generation and water management.
